Jim Thiemens attended the University of Idaho and received a Bachelors of Science in Forest Resource Management in 1968. After Graduation he held a variety of production positions with Weyerhaeuser Company including Log Transportation Superintendent and Logging Foreman from 1969 to 1973 when he joined Potlatch Corporation. At Potlatch he held various Forest Operations Management positions including Area Forest Manager and Woodlands Manager. The responsibilities for these positions included all forestry, logging and administrative activities covering operations on approximately 300,000 acres of Potlatch Corporation forest land. He left Potlatch Corporation in 1995 to assume the position of Vice President of Operations with Koncor Forrest Products Company of Anchorage, Alaska where he was responsible for logging operations in South Central and South East Alaska as well as significant overseas project development and marketing responsibilities. In 1998 he took the position of Vice President and General Manager of Green Diamond Resource Company in Shelton, WA responsible for all Forest Operations in Oregon and Washington. Other activities and positions include two time President of Western Forestry and Conservation Association, past secretary treasurer of The Society of American Foresters, school board member of a private school and President of Clearwater Potlatch Timber Protective Association a private fire protection organization. He also was on the Executive Board of Washington Forest Protection Association where he lead in the publication of a strategic plan and selection of the new Executive Director.
